Discover All The Ways You Can Use Zigzag Stitches
Zigzag stitches are one of the most basic on any sewing machine. It can come in handy in anything from constructing sewing to decoration. However, are you sure you know all the things this stitch has to offer? Let’s find out!
Utilitarian Zigzag Stitch
Zigzag Stitch
Zigzag stitches have a lot of utilitarian benefits. If you sew knit fabric, the zigzag is the best choice to hem or to seam. For other fabrics, it can be useful in encasing raw edges. You can also use it to sew laces. Zigzag stitches can be found on most models, even the best starter sewing machine can do a decent job producing these stitches.
Seam Edge Finish With The Zigzag Stitch Woven fabric can fray easily if you don’t finish the raw edges properly. Two of my favorite ways to finish these edges are to use a serger or using zigzag stitches. I have a serger and I have to admit that it is the quickest way to finish. However, when I want to do something different, I may switch to zigzag stitches. It is beginner-friendly and doesn’t require a whole new machine rather than the one you are having at home.
Zigzag Stitches To Repair Holes Do your projects or garment have a tear or rip? The zigzag stitches can be useful to repair that. Cut out a small scrap of fabric; make sure that it can cover the length and width of the hole. You don’t have to bother finding the exact match as you will not see it on the right side anyway. Place the piece on the wrong side of the garment and zigzag stitch until the piece is secure. The thread you use must match the color of the garment as they will be visible on the right side. I usually use zigzag stitches for repairing clothes. My machine makes things a lot easier. Zigzag Stitches For Appliques
Zigzag Stitches For Appliques Appliques are pieces of fabric that are usually put on top of garments for decoration. To secure them, use normal zigzag stitches or reduce the length to have satin stitches. The latter is the original way to secure appliques. Some people love to use zigzag stitches instead of satin. For a simpler alternative, try to use straight stitches. However, I have to warn you. The edges of the appliques tend to fray more if you use straight stitches.
Zigzag Stitches For Decoration One of my favorite ways to finish a sleeve is with zigzag stitches. I usually sew right on the raw edges and pull as I sew. This way the fabric is stretched with the seam. For this purpose, nothing can beat a good computerized sewing machine for beginners.
